How to add custom emoji to Slack

Upload emoji on desktop or the web and check names, permissions, and file requirements.

1. Prepare a square file

Choose the Slack 128×128 output size here and arrange your text or image inside the canvas. Save a still image as PNG or an animation as GIF, aiming for 128KB or less. Slack also accepts JPG, but use PNG or GIF when you need a transparent background.

2. Upload on desktop or the web

Open the intended workspace in the Slack desktop app or your browser. In the message composer, choose the smiley face, Add Emoji, then Upload Image to select your saved file. Enter a name, save it, and search for it in the emoji picker.

3. Choose a memorable name

Use a short, searchable name; lowercase letters, numbers, and underscores make names such as hello_team easy to share. Leave colons out of the name field, then type :hello_team: in a message after saving. If the name is taken, add a descriptive word, and follow any validation message shown by the name field.

4. Check upload permissions

If you cannot find the upload option, ask a workspace administrator to check your access. Owners can restrict custom emoji creation, and roles such as guests have limited access. Send the file and your proposed name together when asking someone to add it for you.

5. Test in a conversation

Try the emoji in a message and as a reaction to check whether its text remains readable at chat size. If a GIF is too large, simplify the effects or use an image with fewer colors, and inspect its edges against light and dark backgrounds. Platform policies and menus can change, so check the official help below for current requirements before uploading.
