How to upload emoji to a Discord server
Use Server Settings to upload emoji and check the 256KB limit, Nitro, and server boost conditions.
1. Prepare your file
Start with a 128×128 square so you can compare your preview with the small version used in chat. Aim below 256KB with some room to spare, using PNG for still emoji and GIF for animation. Keep the main shape large because tiny text and detailed backgrounds are difficult to read in chat.
2. Open Server Settings
Open the menu next to the intended server name and choose Server Settings, then Emoji. Select Upload Emoji, choose your file, and review its name. Check the server name first to avoid adding your file to the wrong community.
3. Check names and role permissions
Discord emoji names must contain at least two characters and may use letters, numbers, and underscores. You must own the server or have the required role permission, such as Create Expressions, to upload. If the menu is unavailable, ask a server administrator to check your role.
4. Understand animated emoji and Nitro
GIFs use the same upload path in Server Settings, but using animated custom emoji requires a Nitro subscription. Upload permissions and subscription benefits are separate conditions, so check the account that will use the emoji even if the upload succeeds. Keeping a still PNG version gives you another way to express the same reaction.
5. Check available slots and current rules
Server emoji slots increase with server boost levels; if the slots are full, review unused emoji with an administrator. A larger chat attachment allowance does not automatically increase the emoji file limit, so check those limits separately. Platform policies and subscription benefits can change; consult the official help below for current slots and usage conditions.
